Facework was prevalent from the beginning of the semester until mid-October, when we focused on brainstorming ideas; in retrospect, brainstorming was positively impacted by facework and the small team size. As a task, brainstorming was a primarily an additive one in Steiner's (Hackman lecture, 2010) model, as the more ideas we had, the more we had to work with in terms of coming up with a research question. Though we only had four people to produce ideas, the small size of the team also reduced social loafing, as described by Latane et al. (1979). Each of us expressed our ideas openly, and notes were taken in the meeting's minutes. Facework seemed to prevent arguing against ideas during our brainstorming processes. Retrospectively, this makes sense in light of Goffman's (1973) explanation that people do this partially because of "emotional identification with the others and with their feelings." I felt myself suppressing any arguments in favor of nodding and adding to the ideas proposed, and half of the effort was to make the person feel good. I felt comfortable in my team's company during those meetings, but tended to be cautious about what I would say, lest I make some people
